Track - Aztec Gold
Maker - Phil T
Genre - Rally

I wrote this before I knew there was a fixed version. So here it is anyway.

As the title suggests, this is an extension of the Excavation. A good effort from a rookie track maker, but I'd have to say inconsistency is this track's trade mark. The altitude work is extremely good in some places, and jagged and abrupt in others. The racing line is clear and visible half the time, but difficult the other half... with a long segment completely underwater, checkpoint and all. The track features a number of jumps and one set in particular is spaced nicely and timed almost perfectly, and in other spots the jumps will sucker you to overshoot a curve and put you in need of the helicopter. There are several custom textures and some attention to animated textures as well, but there are spots where the alignment of stock corners is way off. But we could probably live with all this for the sake of the race. What we cannot live with is the course. It's long and it roves nicely over several diffrent areas that all fit in with the excavation theme. But the finish line does not meet up with the start line, so you cannot really complete the lap (which begins, btw, with your truck dropping a hundred feet before you touch the ground). And there is something terribly wrong with the map.

But let's give Phil his due. He's worked hard on this and put a lot of time and thought into it. The ground box placement is solid, and the object impact sounds are loads of fun. The bottom line, however, is that this track was probably too ambitious for the level the maker was working at. It's an extrememly long rally that had tons of potential which probably could have been drawn out with more beta testing. If you're looking for good racing on-line or off, then you'll probably want to give this one a pass. But if you want to check out some track making ideas or compare your own track to other rookie work, then by all means have a look. There's lots to see.
