Before you merge close verts, resize it to, um, 23 feet along the largest axis. Merge them, delete them, then resize back to its original size (which you duely noted before making it small, right). Don't forget to check the 'keep proportion' box when resizing down and then back up again. (solution by winterkill so don't blame me if it doesn't work, lol, no, I mean, I'm just kidding, it does work, but it's not my fault).

edit. sorry for taking so long to reply :p

Merge close vertices still doesn't work properly with large objects in Binedit 2. But why?

(I've read the workaround: it's easy enough but I'm curious by nature)

>> But why?

I don't know.

It's something that should have been addressed by now but hasn't, it will be though, and when it is I'll do my best to explain.

The question is what is "close" it should be variable - like let the persons et it. either a specific number or a percentage of the model size.

It is, it is. Default is two editor units, and can be manually set.

The collapsing faces during vert merging of very large models was basically a result of the model turning itself inside out, positive numbers imploding into negatives simply because BE was not designed to handle certain model size parameters. It is now.
