Ok, you might think I am crazy but I have never played 4x4 Evo in my life. Today, I went to Wally world and happened to see it on the shelf, so I bought it. You can imagine the feeling I had when I rushed home to installed the wonderful jewl that everyone keeps talking about. I install in and put it on the best settings to be able to view it nicely for the first time. My heart is racing as I quickly look through the list of tracks and pick a familiar sounding Crazy 2001, it loads and I jump for joy when it comes on, I hit the gas and turn the corner, my heart still beating out of my chest when I hit the jump and suddenly realize this track is an exact replica of Crazy 98 from MTM2. I further realize the keyboard commands are the same. Confused, I go back to the main screen, still searching for a bit of hope, so I go to Winter Wasteland. I hit the gas and realize (as the tires spin) I can't even get up to the start line. I hit reverse and hit hit forward again, got up the hill and the whole track is slick as snort. I understand wanting to be realistic, but that is rediculous. I keep playing a little and realize this game really ***** . And is just like MTM2 in a lot of ways only it's worse. So what's the deal?

The Evos were developed by the same company that made MTM2, the game engine itself is an advanced version of the one behind MTM2 and most everything about it is pretty much the same - editing procedures etc.

Many viewed Evo1 as the sequel to MTM2, since it was from same developers, and our community got to give feedback during developement, and the lead programmer took care of us in many respects - like coding in support for our MTM2 tracks. Some view Evo2 as the real sequel to MTM2, for it's advancements over Evo1, but I still view Evo1 as only only sequel I'll ever see - thanks to the MTM2 track and BIN compatibilty. When Evo1 came along it fragmented our community a bit, Evo1 was out for about one year when Evo 2 came along and fragmented the Evo1 community, not to mention leaving many in the dust thanks to advancing system requirements.

As for myself, the trucks in Evo just don't behave the way they to in MTM2, and for that reason above all others I've left Evo pretty much behind. I'm not sure this addresses your posting but it's two cents I thought I'd add.

Evo2 just takes a realistic approach to driving.

Two admissions I will make. For people who love auto transmission, the game is rather deficient in that area, but I believe is more of a vehicle .trk file issue in some respects, since Leo has made a really nice set of monster trucks for EVO2 that works great with auto.

As well, there are some vehicles that plain stink.

If you would like some help in learning the evo2 characteristic of the vehicles that are most fun to drive, I'll indulge ya.

But I'll let you decide that.

Indeed. Especially when around 5-10mph you want to take a turn and see how the whole car goes in that direction like it would skate on ice. I don't remember if this happens when accelarating or deaccelarating but i know that i HATE this glitch. It's so horrible that in fact this only small glitch made me give up Evo2 almost instantly.

I have both EVO and EVO 4X4, and the only reason I still have them is so that I can compare them to Mal's conversions. Surprisingly however, I now prefer the first version over the second, lol. Neither of them compare to the enjoyment I get from MTM 2 - not even close, but I do understand and appreciate those who swear by the EVO game (either version).

I've never really experienced this to that degree. Of course I'm rarely going slow.

I took some time a long time ago when this issue came up to see if I could wander aimlessly around a track slowly with any difficulty and I did find that the evo2 trucks are very sensitive to throttle input that low amounts of the accelerator input were simply giving the trucks to much instant power at low speeds.

Class 1 - 3 trucks were not much of a problem in this area at all.

The race trucks due to thier enormous power levels aggravated the effect.

The realistic issue comes into effect when you are on the side of a hill, which is where the effect is most noticable.

I learned light feathered throttle input solves this for me. Gearing up with manual transmission helps alot cause it reduces the torque to the wheels with any given throttle input.

This is where auto users have trouble.


But again, its a matter of what a person is willing to learn, or put up with.

Nothing wrong with not liking something, and it is understandable that mtmers will relentlessly compare the game, but I view them as different with a different type of game play in mind, but similar in respect to creating.

I must admit, the textures while, not neccesarily better, they are very nice and VERY realistic. Also, when you make a jump, the vehicle immediatly plummets down where MTM2 you get huge air. Think about driving a car in real life, when you jump a hill (and who hasn't) it drops like a brick. I can see where that is more realistic, but then, not as favorable in my opinion. I don't like the handleing at all. Maybe I am just used to MTM2. They could have thrown in a few more veiws, and something is not right when I drive the monster trucks from Leoz Place, they won't switch gears automaticly in automatic mode. (anyone know?) Finally, in my comparison, I guess it was just made for people who's computers couldn't handle MTM2 and they made one like it for them.

Yup, if your wanting mtm2 in a new package thats not how they made it.

The difficulty people have with EVO is thats what they wanted, when in reality, if a game is as good as all the racers say mtm2 is, then the place would not be so filled up with rumblers making it hard to find many people racing much in mtm2.


Try not to look at it as a replacement for mtm2, but a different game.

Street, i actually have this problem with a class 1,2,3 car and manual gear. But i don't recall if the problem occurs when accelerating or deaccelarating.

Anyway it ****ed me off because no way i would have done tracks with that horrible glitch since i don't like making full speed tracks(i don't know why but it just iritates me alot).

There are 7 views to choose from: hood, cockpit, window, inertia, skycam, chase far and chase near. The game lets you select your 3 favorite views so you only have to tab through 3 rather than 7 while racing. IMO a very good feature.

The way to select your 3 favourite views is:
During a quick race press Esc. This pauses the game and a menu appears. Use the arrow keys to scroll down to View 1 then press Enter until you find the view you want. Repeat the process for views 2 and 3.

I really can't compare the 2 games. The more sophistcated editing capabilities of Evo 2 certainly appeal to me being a track maker. As Winterkill points out though, the trade off is heavier system requirements. Since getting into Evo1 & 2 I have upgraded my CPU, motherboard and graphics card out of necessity. When I re-installed MTM2, out of curiosity I maxed out all the graphics options and typed Frame during a race to check my frame rates.
To my astonishment I was getting an average of 150 fps on the stock tracks!

Yes, and no wonder your having trouble. Image There is also an in game setting go to "options" "controller setup" "advanced options" I have my sensitivity slider set at 15, this purely can depend on what kind of device you use to drive with. But pay good attention to that setting and try them all from one end of the slider to the other cause it can make a significant difference in control in some cases.

I have zipped two replay files for you to look at. Place them in your replay folder of evo2, make that folder if its not there.

I used the C2001 track cause I figured you were most familiar with that than any of the others.

One with the file name 28c2001 is a 28.5 second (3rd lap) 3 lap replay driving Leos bigfoot monster truck, not your ordinary mtm2 truck huh? Almost every turn I'm using throttle control to maintain the attitude of the truck in the turn. Because of the speed, the trucks are less forgiving.

The settings I used for that track are as follows.

Tires = Shallow
Automatic trans
40 suspension
5 axle
30F / 70R brake
80F / 20R torque split
90 handling balance <--- this also can depend on your control device.

Here is the replay

leos monster truck replay for C2001


For a class 3 game truck most everyone uses the Tundra SR5 Access Cab.

I can drive C2001 at full throttle the whole way using auto in this. I have a 34 sec c2001 ( 3rd lap) replay driving the tundra.

Garage settings.

Tires = Shallow
Automatic Trans
30 suspension
55 axle using the 4x4 lo setting, you switch that when your on the track waiting for the race to start, the default key is the 4 key.
30F / 70R brake
torque split is not changeable on class 3 vehicles.
100 handling balance

Here is the replay for that.

class 3 tundra replay

I hope that helps you at least get a few laps in with something that is drivable. My advise is get real good at the class 3 trucks first, then move on the the faster ones like leos or the career race trucks.

I really enjoy the class 3 races, but for some intense driving, I'll choose the in game monster truck from career mode, very difficult truck to master.

This is still a mistery to be as Evo 2 was working better (had more fps) then Evo 1 with graphics turned all the way up in both games and on the same computer :confused:

Well, only if your video card supported the T&L hardware rendering.

You have to remember that alot of people with evo1 still had 16 meg voodoo cards and older TNT cards, straight Direct X rendering was terribly lower than evo1.

Evo2 will not run very well even on higher end video cards if you do not select the T&L rendering. There could be exceptions to that but that all it would be, an exception.
