BinNamer 1.0 by Frank Racis

An easy to use BIN texture replacer (it replaces textures in BINs without the need to re-map them in BINedit). Available at Frank's utilities page: <a href=http://www.bigfoot.com/~frank_racis/fly>HERE</a>

It's easier to use than MDMRE's BIN texture replacer and there's no BIN filesize limit - therefore no more hex editing required for BINs that MDMRE's utility can't handle (I assume). ;-)

It's a 32-bit Windows program BUT it's interface is command line only, meaning you must use it from the "DOS prompt". To bring up the DOS prompt click the MS-DOS Prompt link in your start menu or type "command" in the Run box in your start menu. To switch the DOS 'box' between window mode and full screen use the key combo Alt-Enter.

Put BinNamer.exe in your 'path' so you can access it from anywhere, I recommend putting it in the "C:\Windows\Command" folder.

Here is an example of the program in action, depicting six uses of the command line:

The first is the program run without any command line 'arguments', which results in a lesson in proper usage.

The second is run with the BIN name, and shows what texture names reside in the BIN.

The third depicts a failed attempt to change a texture name listed in the BIN. Why the failure? It seems the program requires "case sensitive" usage, meaning there is a difference between capitalized and non-capialized letters.

The fourth and fifth depict a proper change of both texture names, using proper capitalization.

The sixth depicts a listing of the changed BIN. Pretty slick utility Frank! Thanks.<font color=black>

Does anyone ever get the message below when useing binnamer?

binnamer.exe is in the windows command dir and so are the bins and raws, but I keep getting the same message with new or old bins I know are not corrupted, the problem is also not case related.

???

The windows\command dir is, as a rule, a place to put programs. It is not a place to store files, even temporarily.

Try making a c:\temp dir and copy the .BIN there. Then run the program from inside c:\temp. You can/should be able to leave binnamer.exe in the command dir since it is, after all, a program.
On a related note, what happens if you do the \binnamer cow.bin line while inside the windows\command dir instead of just at the C:\ prompt? I can't remember the specifics, but it could be that the PATH is for executable files only, and not files you're working on. Just a thought.

I simply dumped my copy of the program in the Models folder of my MTM2 dir - no need to mess around with swapping files in and out of folders, so long as you're prepared to type out the long directory name for the CD command. And, I found, you don't need the .RAWs in the same directory, nor is it case sensitive for opening .BIN files (but it IS for the .RAW swapping).

I'm having a hard time with this program, how can I make MSDos start off with

C:\>

instead of

C:\WINDOWS\Desktop>

?

When you open the dos window, type <font color=cyan>cd \</font>

That will put you at the root of the drive. "cd" stands for "change directory".

I'm reminded of another command line program I posted a tip for, <a href=http://forum.mtm2.com/~forum/pages/Forum8/HTML/000471.html>here</a> (08-11-2001 07:03 PM). Here are the relevant principles that can apply equally to Binnamer:

<font color=aqua>Put slice60.exe in the Windows or the Windows\Command folder, it will then be available from ANY folder ANYwhere on your hard drive! Thus no need for long and complicted command lines with all kinds of relatives paths to type. As was suggested on the front page: http://mtm2.com/~mtmg/slice60/
Then put your .TGA file in it's own working folder, to keep things tidy.

...Tell you what, there is no real need to open a DOS window, you can type your command line in notepad and save it as a batch file in the same folder as your texture. Open notepad and type this:

slice60 dpe.tga /ixy

Then save the file as "whatever.bat" in the same folder as your texture. .BAT is an executable file type that runs DOS style command lines, one command per line, double-click your .BAT file and it will do the work as if you were there at the command line yourself. </font>
