Dust Bowl '07

I hope you don't mind me using the MTMG as the main sponsor Phin. [:P]

What I'm trying to do with this circuit is make it seem like an annual event on a purpose-built dirt circuit. Something like the CORR series, and this is the series finale. It begins and ends in a tight, technical stadium, with a quick blast through the countryside in between. I wanted it to be fast, but to require skill to race well.

If I'm lucky I can actually finish this one, since I've got it all planned out on paper. My other rather large project has been shelved in the meantime.

As for my current progress on the track, I'm happy with the layout so far, but it's still missing all the models, and some of the background scenery sculpture. The stadium layout (including bridge) is a replica of a local go-kart track. There will be grandstands, spectators, advertising hoardings, and maybe even TV camera setups, if I'm allowed to modify Yeastman's models. On the outer circuit, I'll add barriers, more spectators, parking, banners on the bank, and of course trees. I know there are texture misalignments, but I've spent hours trying to cover them up as subtley as possible.

So, what do you think so far? I'm sure a certain Glow Ball will have a lot to say for himself. :D

Love the looks of that track so far, Cr@$h. Don't think I've ever seen anyone sketch a layout like that, then photograph it lol. That's pretty cool!

As for the logos, the first too are ok, but that last one is AWESOME!! ;)

That's a great concept, Cr@$h.

I've always wanted to replace real logos with MTM related ones. :D

The track is progressing well (for once), I think the surrounding scenery in terms of hills is finished. I'm working on the stadium, which will be surrounded by corporate sponsorship and TV cameras. Plenty of grandstands too. Click here for a preview. Are you guys going to want a new beta soon? And could someone help position checkpoints? :)

Mal, is it OK if I modify your MX banner models so that they stretch across the track?

Thanks, I used your TV stands too. They're perfect for the occasion. :D

New beta is up, with added models, sponsoring, terrain and a map. Could someone suggest CP placement?

If you find there's too many or terrain blocks a few shortcuts then you can always reduce the number, but generally speaking it might go something like this.

Nice track Crash. The camera stands are a nice touch.

Lookin good, Cr@$h. :) Should be a fun one to race, that's for sure. Not sure if you're all too concerned with the minor textue misalignments at this stage . . . or maybe you already aware. Other than that, I took note that Malibu's banner is in there three times, whereas mine and the Cownap banner are only in there twice. What's up with that??? Mal send you a few bucks, did he? If so, I'll double it lol. Ok seriously, I think once is definitely enough for my name (not at all would be my preference, but that's not my call . . . I do, however, appreciate the honor, bud), and twice at the most for the other two. Three times for Mal though . . . that's just asking for trouble lol.

As for cp placement, the only potential issue I see is with cp 4. I'd suggest moving it up a bit more to ensure races don't circumvent that 180º turn. Of course, models would work just as well, but if your plan is to leave it open, I think moving it up a tad would be best.

I know about those, trying to fix them got on my nerves so I gave up lol.

I don't know if you watch motorsport much on TV, but it's common for sponsors to have up to 30 billboards around the track. I can replace some of the banners with other logos though.

I'll probably have it just at the turn-in for that corner, to make sure you can't quite cut it.

How fast are you guys going around this track? I hit 100 as I leave the first water jump, and never go slower than 50 on the outer circuit, unless I screw up.

Hehe fair enough on the misaligned textures. As for watching racing - nope, I don't watch racing of any kind on tv. I think it's cool and I admire those guys/girls for what they're able to do out there, but I don't watch racing on tv, which of course, explains my ignorance about the banner. Still . . . three signs with Malibu on it is more than I can take without getting nauseated lolol. Really though, you don't have to change your banners, bud. It was just something I noticed, and with me being a "less is more" kind of guy, those kinds of things typically jump out at me. :)

The speed sounds about right, and love the how well the track flows. I also like how you didn't overdue it with the switchbacks, and that there's a very slight bumpiness to the track. ;)

Thanks Copey, I'm glad you like it. You SLO racers seem to know good tracks when you see them, so that's a big compliment. :)

I've been pondering some more atmospheric additions. What do you think about ambient crowd noises, spectators around the track, and parked vehicles?

[edit] This is a shot from yesterday's GP2 race. How many DHL boards can you see? :D

New beta is up. Have I got overboard on the barriers in the stadium? There are still more to come. Any general feedback would be appreciated.

Definitely! That would be great. Although I do feel that there's too little variation in barrier designs. I'll see what I can do about other ideas for logos, but I'm not promising. Great track all the same, first-rate work there!

Heh, I'm stuck for new logo ideas. It'd be great if you could help with them.

There will probably be the 'MTMG Safety Safari', named after the NHRA fire crew. :D
