If I have a task that I dont recognize I will just Google it. I can usually find out what it is and if its needed. Once I know what it is more Googling will tell me how to kill it if I want it dead.

You can always list the ones you cant figure out here and I bet someone can tell you what it is and how to kill it.

PS 43 tasks is not an unusually high number for XP, I just counted and I have about 47 tasks right now and only about four of them are open programs. Of the rest I probably could kill five or six since they are schedulers and/or helper programs but I dont worry about them since they only use a few kilobytes of memory.

How much memory does it have? More memory usually means faster operations.

A few things that can help off of the top of my head

Faster CPU
More memory
Faster hard drive
Defrag the hard drive
Less programs on startup
Set XP to hibernate instead of turn off.

My suggestion is dont worry about it. Do what I do, turn it on and go take a leak and get a mountain dew while its booting up.

Yep. Start it up, walk away, then come back. A computer could boot in 30 seconds and it wouldn't be fast enough for me.

Hibernation doesnt take any more power than a full shutdown, it writes the current "state" of the computer to a file on the hard drive. When you restart it loads from the file instead of doing a normal startup.

Here is a quick article on power management in XP, it focuses on laptops that gives more details.
