I'm hearing things

You know in the movies the way a british police siren has two tones. DO do DO do DO do ? Welp, I have a low key digital version of that near my desk someplace. LOL, yea, I know but I have a power bar, the server comp, a couple monitors, two phones, router and modem all near the same spot... and I can't tell which one is making the sound. hehe. I feel like I'm being visited by Rod Serling. It doesn't do it all the time and when it does, it doesn't last long. Whenever I hear it I jump to the corner to try and track it down, but no luck yet since the sound reverberates off the walls and such, and then just when I think I'm getting close, it stops. So, I'll return to whatever I was doing, then some time later it'll do it again. Tonight it was like somebody was teasing me. No sooner did I resume, it would start agin. I mean, like, where am I supposed to go to find out about this? I don't know what's doinng it, or why or what it's supposed to mean, or what I'm supposed to do about it. I'm hoping it's the heat. lol, no, I mean near the comp. I point a fan toward it afterward and it seems to make a difference. perhaps a fan bearing is acting up, I had one do that for a while, make a funny low pitch sound then stop then start up again, then stop... drove me nuts for a week or two and was about to go pick up a new one before it froze completely but it just stopped making the noise, that was months ago and it's been quiet ever since...

do you have a modem in there? they have those little speakers on em maybe it's malfunctioning, stick a piece of black tape over it, or snip the wires, that'll shut it up.

it may also just be some vibration humming along on some loose board, so you might check for some loose screws in yer noggin

or just grab a bottle of scotch and hum along.

The monitor on my old computer sometimes tends to make a high-pitched humming/whistling noise when I put it into 800x600 resolution... it usually ceases after a short while (I assume once it's warmed up) but it's a strange and annoying thing to listen to.

And my new computer makes odd sounds on startup - used to be a kind of rattle but now it's become a low hum, and goes away after a short while. I guess it's a fan a little out of whack...

Oh, and there's the other sound it makes... goes kinda like "I WILL DEVOUR YOUR SOUL"...

Hahahaha WK. I don't know Phin...I think I woulda just kept this one to myself. All I can say is, I know a few guys at a place called "Happy Acres" - they may be able to help you out lol.

Take a look in the CMOS settings. You may have an alarm set to 'on' in the temprature warning settings or some other warning area for low or high voltage reading from the power supply. They will trip and reset quickly if the power supply spikes or dips if even for a micro second.

This is probabaly it. I haven't nailed it yet, but I'm getting closer. Power is pretty stable around here but the temperature, as you know, has been high this season. And if this is it, then I think it might be a good thing anyway... keeping cool is a good thing.

(and at least I'm not seeing things ;-)
