Spybot

Post by NIR_PitBull »

Ok, seems lately that things on my comp had been just a little slow. So I ran Norton Virus and Adaware SE. Well I'd seen that BD and others use the Spybot as a third guard. That sound right, LoL. Any way I decided to try a run with it. Installed and ran it. After so, the wife got on the comp to do her thing. Well when she went to one of her site's{which is totally safe}it gave her trouble about it. Luckly I had done a backup for Spybot, put things back as they where. Is that a norm for it to say something about where we go on line?
Those that know me know I know NOTHING about this area. Lost trying to understand the stuff. Does it have settings to let you do what its meant for and not have something come-up and say hit this or that to continue? Did I do or didnt do something right. ANY advice on what I'm doing with it would be FAB. Sorry guys, just wanted to be safe here. Like I said, its just a HAIR slow. Nothing major by NO means, couple extra sec thats all. Charles

Sounds like you are getting the immunize warning. It comes up when you visit a site that has been reported to put spyware on PCs among other things.

Does it have settings to let you do what its meant for and not have something come-up and say hit this or that to continue?
Yep. Start spybot, click on IMMUNIZE, then set it to block silently. See the pic below.

What is the "totally safe" website it is warning you about? Perhaps there's something there you aren't aware of...

What it does is add pages to the Restricted Sites area under options in Internet Explorer. Under the Tools menu in IE open internet options, then go to the security tab, click on restricted sites, then click on sites, from that area you can highlight the address of the site you want to visit and then remove it from the list.
Reality is for those that cant handle video games.

Ok now. It ran through, had 79 things it didnt like. After hitting {Fixed Selected Problems} the checks became big Green one's. Is that it, do I need to do more or just close it?

Another question guys. Just deleted all Temp Internet Files. Theres 16 new files in the Temp-Internet-Files {Folder} from resigning into a few places. But when I check the propertys of the folder it says there 2.49 gigs of stuff in it. How can that be??? 169,595 Files and 35 folders in there, but just the 16 file and NO folders are in there. LoL. That CANT be right, is it.

If you go into IE options and delete temp files, that should get rid of everything - it may take a minute so let it work. However, you'll want to do that for each user.

Also, go to this forlder for each user

C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Temp

And delete everything in there too.

----------

If the file count is still high, then go to folder options and check the boxes that show all files, system files too. If there is anything hidden, that should show them. Then you can delete.

That's it. You can close it. Be sure to use the "Search For Updates" feature at least once a week or two to keep your spyware definitions file current.

Well, first things first, I don't use IE. But I just checked and this is my properties.

<center><img src="http://mtm2.com/~forum/images/temporaryinternetfiles1.gif" width="540" height="444"></center>

There are no files in the temp internet folders. Obviously, this is another MS glitch. I wouldn't worry about it. If you want to dig, you might try looking where MS stores temp media files and see if there's some sort of shortcut to it, but I really wouldn't worry about it.

[ edit ] What did you do?

[ edit agin ] Win98 temp folder is c:\windows\temp You might also want to clear that out, if you haven't already.
