I can't play mp4 and m4a files and wondered if anybody else has had any luck with them. I found a site that offers a codec but I don't know anything about it. Any insights?

On my .m4a files I get an unsupported format error with DivxSLO_SCATTER wrote:What about DivX? Will those file types play using that?
On my .mp4 files I get the same error except in some cases the video part of the file will play.
I have looked and was never able to find a free codec that let me play either of those formats with windows media player. I did find one that claimed it would play them but they wanted $$$ to dowload it. I am sure I could find a crack/hack for it somewhere but since those file types are rare and I can still play them I didnt bother.
Reality is for those that cant handle video games.
Realplayer used to be bloatware and packed with spyware, no? Is it any better now? There's a realplayer alternate but I haven't looked at real media so long I know nothing of it anymore.
I have divx installed but it doesn't cover these file types.
I installed the 3ivx.com codecs and it plays.... but in the old media player not the new. Kinda weird. And I read some fine print that says it's a limited edition demo. It'll do what I need but it would be nice to get more permanent, user friendly, solutions.

I havent tried it but when I was looking for a proper codec I saw several programs that would convert them to mp3/mpg files, you might look for one of them.
I have version 10.5. I have had it installed for over a year with no spyware at all that I could contribute to it. Just be sure to do a custom install when you run it the first time, that way you will know what it is putting where. They only thing I did was disable realsched.exe from running all the time at startup.Realplayer used to be bloatware and packed with spyware, no? Is it any better now?
